What’s a typical day in your current role at TSS?

If there is one thing that my 6 years as Hire Manager for TSS has taught me is that there is no such thing as a typical day! My role includes liaising with customers to help devise suitable rental solutions for their wide range of needs, so that could be advising them on a suitable mic package for a band show, designing a stage set for a conference, or a lighting package for a theatre show. In addition to looking after customers from the office, I can often be found out on site managing projects and crews large and small, overseeing warehouse operations, researching the latest technologies or making the tea! I have no made the leap into Sales to mix things up!

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of the job is the variety of challenges that come my way, and the customers I get to work with. The passion that our clients and our staff have for live event technology and the effect it can have on people is infectious.

What did you do before joining TSS? Why/how did you get into the industry?

Before joining TSS I had worked in a wide range of roles across the entertainment industry. I spent much of my career as a working audio engineer and studio owner, before moving into the Education sector to work with young people in performing arts technology. It was my love of theatre, film and music that first sucked me in, I have always been mixed up in acting, music and writing from an early age.

What are your favourite/most interesting/most unusual gigs/jobs you’ve done in the past?

I love the variety of my job. As a musician I wrote music for TV deodorant ads,as a producer I recorded albums for great artists, as a sound designer I put didgeridoo samples into speed control car prototypes. As a theatre tech I have built custom spaceship sets, as a lighting designer I have turned huge buildings into laser screens, and as a video tech I have built massive Space Invaders out of LED video wall for sci-fi club nights. It’s a lot of fun…

What do you do in your spare time?

When I occasionally get some spare time I tend to be spending it with my wife and two tiny children. I play bass and synths in an electro-trip-hop-grunge band, and love to snowboard whenever I can.

What TV show is your guilty pleasure?

I’m a massive sci-fi geek so I don’t care what anyone says…Babylon 5 was awesome.

Who would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with?

It would have to be the wife and kids (they might read this), although someone who could fashion a nice bathroom with running water from rocks and bamboo would probably be more useful.
